Federal Government Poised to Send Scores Federal Agents to San Francisco

The federal government appeared poised on Wednesday to dispatch scores of federal agents to the Bay Area region for a large-scale border security initiative, sparking condemnation from local politicians.

Specifics of the Operation

Details of the mission were still emerging, but it will allegedly feature over a hundred federal agents, according to reports. The personnel are expected to begin using the Coast Guard facility in the East Bay, opposite San Francisco. It was still uncertain whether national guard troops would participate.

Official Response

The mission is the result of weeks of threats by Donald Trump to take action against the progressive municipality. The state's leader Gavin Newsom criticized the decision, labeling it “straight from the dictator’s handbook”.

“He sends out covered agents, he sends out Border Patrol, he sends out ICE, he creates concern and apprehension in the population so that he can lay claim for addressing that by dispatching the national guard,” the governor stated. “This mirrors the incendiary putting out the inferno.”

City Readiness

San Francisco is the newest metropolitan center singled out by the federal effort of large-scale detentions. The operation is expected to trigger a showdown between the White House and city officials who have pledged to stop paramilitary operations in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for months for Trump to carry out repeated threats to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s municipal chief stated again that the city was prepared.

“During this period, we have been anticipating the chance of an impending government operation in our city,” stated the official, noting that he had implemented additional measures on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and ensure our departments are organized prior to any national intervention.”

Legal Background

Despite legal challenges to operations in a several municipalities, including Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles, Trump has asserted “complete control” to dispatch the state troops in cities, citing the Insurrection Act which permits presidents specific authority to send forces on American territory.

Local Response

Newsom – who previously served as San Francisco’s mayor – had vowed to intervene “without delay” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the federal government can deploy troops into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no supervision, no accountability, no consideration of regional control – it constitutes an attack on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Public associations, including civil rights groups formed in the first Trump administration, have organized to quickly mobilize a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at community centers.

Local Consequences

In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a predominantly Latino population, city supervisor stated to media last week she and her constituents had been bracing for this time. “The point that workers cease employment, when anyone Black or brown can’t freely walk outside without the fear of government officers discriminating against and apprehending them, the point when students avoid classrooms, become too afraid to go to the supermarket or doctor,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is essentially a closure the extent of which we have not experienced since the pandemic.”

Military Situation

Roughly three hundred out of 4,000 regional national guard troops stay under federal control under an directive from Trump. About 200 of them had been sent to the Pacific Northwest, where they were staying in standby in the midst of a legal battle over their deployment.

This time, Newsom said he had requested the California national guard troops under his authority to staff food banks during the administrative stoppage.
