The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Attack as Authorities Persist in Manhunt for Killer.
Both young individuals who died in Saturday’s mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the release by local law enforcement of the single suspect questioned in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was vice-president of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also posted condolences on social media, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.
The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
Nine more persons were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said late Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a raid at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our community”.
The assailant discharged a weapon inside a room in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm pistol, a police source told the news agency.
Officers that searched the hotel recovered two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was arrested, the news agency reported.
The Wounded Victims

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was known for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and peers and grieve for of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
