Two Victims Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Police Press On With Hunt for Perpetrator.
Both young individuals who were killed in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their assailant continued following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.
Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed words of sorrow online, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.
His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were injured in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man detained in a search at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our city”.
The shooter discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a police source informed the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that entered the lodging recovered a pair of pistols and magazines when the suspect was detained, as was reported.
The Wounded Victims
Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Additional Memorials
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
